Film Special: Rockin’ at the Tahoe Relay

Wednesday, June 17th, 2009

When a couple of old friends recruited me to replace an injured runner on their team for the June 13 Tahoe Relay, I said yes right away. What better way to kick off  summer, party with friends and family, and get in a high-quality run? Plus, it marked the one-year anniversary of falling down the front porch and breaking my foot. I wanted to celebrate a comeback year and experience the camaraderie that comes with team effort.

The seven of us formed a coed masters (40 and over) team, dividing the 72-mile lake loop into legs ranging from 8 to 12 miles each. My leg was a hilly 12.3 miles, which I covered in 1:33:14, or 7:35 average pace — but that includes a minute-and-half-long potty break. Given the altitude and some tummy troubles, I’m pretty satisfied with my time.

I brought along a brand-new Flip camera, shot a lot of goofy and shaky video, messed around with iMovie for the first time and made the following 6-minute movie — which has left me rather brain dead and short on words. Thanks to my “Tahoe Redondo” teammates — Mark Tipton, Christine Chapon, Dave Sloane, Jennifer Ray, Brett Wilson and Keith Evans-Orville — for letting me join them this year!

Nice job on the video, Sarah. It looks totally professional! Well, OK, except for the crazy finishing sequence (and maybe the point where Brett was running behind Dave and you with the camera), but one could argue those shots were intentional. :D Thanks so much for documenting our fun weekend together. We’ll miss you, and your speedy legs, next year.

  2. Mark Says:

‘Tis a work of genius. If you see only one movie this year about the Tahoe Relay, make it this one. Really, though, a great outing for us and your iMovie skills. We couldn’t ask for a better memento of the day. Sorry I blew the interview in the car. It was great to have you on the team this year, Sarah, and we will miss you next year, but I understand, world travel calls! Happy trails.

Sarah, I love your blog and was pleasantly surprised to see you on Tahoe Redondo. You ran the same leg as me. I was able to put together a team of fast 40+ runners and we finished ahead of you guys. Do I smell a rivalry?

Excellent job on the video. Your blog also surpasses mine.

I hope to meet you in person some day. Maybe we can be on the same team at some race.

May I ask which Flip model did you get? I thought the video turned out quite good!

  5. Sarah Says:

Yes — it’s the Flip Mino. They also make a Mino Hi-Def but we chose the regular one since HD takes up so much memory.
